Human Cystatin C is a low molecular weight cysteine proteinase inhibitor of 13 kDa, which is produced at a constant rate in all neucleated cells of the body. It is cleared from the body through the kidneys and has concentrations proportional to the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Traditionally creatinine has been used as a marker for kidney function, however this test is greatly influenced by age, gender, race, physical activity, diet and disease. The creatinine clearence test is also costly and inconvienient. Numerous clinical studies have shown that the Cystatin C test has high sensitivity and shows greater standardization across trial groups. This makes Cystatin C assay ideal for this purpose.
